Discovery Lands....

The space shuttle Discovery landed safely in California on Friday after bad weather in Florida prevented it from landing there. We were more interested in this mission because we actually got to see Discovery on the launch pad here:

Also, during our lunch with astronaut Jon McBride he mentioned that NASA hates it when the shuttle lands in California because it costs 2 million dollars for the shuttle to fly back to California and that's exactly what happened on this mission.

We also have got in the habit lately of watching the space shuttle as well as the International Space Station fly over Calgary at night. It is a fascinating sight!

It happens a couple of times a night.

NASA actually has a webpage for Calgary that tells you exactly when you can see these flyovers:

http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/realdata/sightings/cities/view.cgi?country=Canada&region=Alberta&city=Calgary

Here is a pic of international space station as it flew over Calgary tonight at 9:16pm. It was visible for three minutes.

Deja Parade.

This was weird.

I got a call this past Friday to go to an office downtown. I parked the car and disappeared into one of the buildings downtown. Read this post before? Yeah, me too:

http://deanandselena.blogspot.com/2009/09/insta-parade.html

I was coming out of the same office as last time a parade broke out and ANOTHER parade broke out while I was in that same office. What are the chances of that?

Anyway, this parade reminded me of one of my favourite movie scenes of all time, Ferris Buellers... Wait a minute, I already posted that clip! Weird.

This whole parade thing reminds of this movie:

Tonight we went to the Xposure wrap up tour. There were 6 bands, and the one I really went to see was Ghostkeeper, but I was a little disapointed when the song I wanted to hear, was kinda merged with another and I didn't get to hear it. Oh well, I'll listen to the disc. It was a night out, and I probaobly would've just been on the computer all night anyway!

but if you want to hear the song I went to hear, here is the link, it's called Mr No Show.... haha maybe that's why they didn't play it!

Strange Moments in Traffic.

I was driving to work this morning and this is what I saw:

It looks like one of those Remax balloons you see flying around Calgary had decided to drop in on the residents of Hidden Valley. However, this balloon is actually parked in some green space near these homes and they were launching two of these balloons as I drove by... A cool but kind of a strange sight!

Two Golden Tickets!

By an incredible stroke of luck, I am going to see President George W. Bush speak in Edmonton next month! Very exciting. It will complete the journey I began on the honeymoon when I had the privilege of standing on the south lawn of George W. Bush's Whitehouse in March 2008:

http://deanandselena.blogspot.com/2008/03/day-whitehouse.html

On October 2oth, my friend and fellow Bush supporter Russ will travel north with me to listen to this great man speak. It is a dream come true.

Rocky Horror Newbs!

Maddie and I partook in something utterly amazing last night, or rather this morning as it started after midnight. We went to the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Now, this has been one of my favorite movies of all time, and growing up in Winnipeg I took the theater that played it every Friday for granted, never going, always having tomorrow. Then I moved, and trying to find a partner to go to the movie with got harder and harder. Then one day Maddie pulled the movie out of the pile and asked what's this? We watched it, and like the chip off the old block that she is, had an instant love for the movie. Since that fact, we have tried to track down when it plays in Calgary to go to it. We missed it in Montana one year by a week, and haven't had any luck until tonight. We went in costume, because it's what you do, and it adds to the fun. Maddie went as none other that Frankenfurter himself, I went as Columbia, ( as far as my supplies would allow, but Maddie was bang on!) we had our props consisting of :
Newspaper, water pistol, toast, cards, a light, a noise maker, rubber gloves, bubbles, and a roll of toilet paper. We got there early and had our tickets already bought online, so we got the front of the house. We were ready... we were excited, and then.... we found out we were missing a WHOLE part of the experience. We did NOT know the audience yelled back at the screen between the lines. Not yelling the next line, a whole other script that fits between. Here is an example..(the audience part is in orange...."There are those who say life is an illusion, LIKE YOUR NECK! that reality is simply a figment of the imagination. LIKE YOUR NECK! If this is so, then Brad and Janet are quite safe. HOWEVER. However, the sudden departure ... the lines were hilarious, and having seen the movie many times ourselves, it didn't matter if we couldn't hear every word on screen, but HOW much fun this added to the movie is immeasurable!! We did dance to the time warp, and we threw toast, and wore the newspaper, and sang the songs... but apparently, we have our homework cut out for us!!! All in all, it was FANTASTIC! and I'm so glad my "little me" enjoys it like I do! :-)

Finally the day I've waited for!

ready, set, go...

Janet and Eddie

before the movie started the "Fake Mustaches" came on, they lipsinced to songs and acted them out, they were really good!!

5 seconds to lips....

thru out the movie there were scenes that actors played on the stage. Some of them were funny, like pulling on Frankenfurter's coat, and he kicks his leg up, so the person on stage falls back..

the sinister stage show in the movie, where all the characters are like puppets, and are now all wearing Franknfurters outfit...

thru the credits one more dance of Time Warp with everyone....

those seats aren't empty, the people are dancing, it was a sold out show tonight. Perfect ending to the day... and I can't express in words how FUNit was!!!!!! :-)

Rainbow of color

Today down Stephen ave. Rainbows were in full bloom. The Pride Parade "paraded" in undies, rainbows, cat suits and superheroes. It was a burst of color and fun. Afterwards we followed the parade into Olympic square, where you could shop, eat, and listen to music while dancing in the streets. Me and Maddie and her friend Mitch went, and we broke into dance when they played Numa Numa.

Mitch bought a cape and was making it fly...

waitin' for the parade to start

we starting talking to people by us, so they seemed a natural to take our pic.

the Grannies, they were awesome...

Grannies love diversity sign...
rainbow floats
Wonder Wo"man"
Kings and Queens
Deva Dave's booth.... awesome wigs and shoes!! We went to his store on Edmonton Trail after the parade, but it was closed today.

Mickey Buys Spidey

This week in one of the largest deals of its kind, Mickey Mouse pulled a cool 4 billion out of his pocket and now welcomes Spiderman (as well as 5000 other comic book characters) into the magical world of Disney. I am just a Disney noob so I really do not know what to make of it. Universal, Disney's arch rival, has a theme park full of Marvel characters and that is now owned by Disney. What will happen? So I turned to our resident expert on Disney and asked her some questions on what this means for Disney and Universal.

Question: What does it mean for Universal? Will they have to close all their park rides as they move to Disney?

Selena: Sources confirm that we won't have to pretend the big green coaster in Marvel Island Unviversal isn't something other than the Hulk that we have all grown to love. There won't be new paint on the spiderman ride and it won't be turned into a joy ride thru New York without Spidey Villians tossing our car around. From what I understand and hope, is that Marvel will stay intact in Islands of Adventure, until they themselves choose to close the ride.

Question: What do you think Disney will do with Spiderman and 4999 other characters?

Selena: Well, Disney needs a whole new park to support this change, you can't exactly have Cinderella and Wolverine having lunch together! I guess for now until they sort things out the logical place to put the superheroes would be Hollywood. It will be an interesting journey, and hopefully means even more fun for park goers!

Question: Do you think this is a answer answer to Universal's opening of the much anticipate Wizarding World of Harry Potter due to open next year?

Selena: I think to incorporate 5000 new characters, and come up with 4 Billion clams.... it's been in the works awhile. Maybe they were deciding between the 2, and lost Harry so just went forward with plan B. Besides is there really a threat to Disney ever??

Insta-Parade!

I was running around downtown on Tuesday to a dental office - a pretty normal thing for me to do on a Tuesday afternoon. Every once in a while something out of the ordinary happens.

I parked my car, crossed the downtown streets and disappeared into one of the skyscrapers. I completed my dental mission in about 15 minutes and retraced my steps back to my car. Except something was very different now on the streets. In the 15 minutes while I was in the dental office, a huge parade has broken out. It came down 3rd and it cut downtown in half. It backed up traffic for miles. Cool! I snapped these photos with my camera phone as I knew this was bloggable.

Tony the Tiger playing with the cops and getting arrested.

The whole thing kind of reminded me of one of my favourite movie scenes of all time from Ferris Buellers Day Off:

At the cabin

I just realized we didn't post any pictures from the cabin, or Bobcageon. We didn't have Internet at the lake, and then the whirlwind started, so here is a "back blog" from the first days of our summer holiday.....

Me and my Aunty

Uncle Ray working hard, getting ready for the bonfire.

Peeking at the boat thru the dock rails. Their cabin is in a little spot where the shore dips in, so they have a nice calm area of lake all to themselves.

Maddie enjoying the water...

This is the big boat, the motor boat sailed it's last voyage a couple of weeks before we arrived, now the ride to the cabin is nice and slow. On the upside... you don't have to worry so much about condensing suitcases!

Maddie's goal is to get everyone in the water every year, here she is racing Uncle Ray into the lake.

a test round of pass the ace.... Maddie won this one, but that's where her streak ended.

the main room of the cabin, and the magic couches, you lay down on them, and before you know it, you are "OUT".

last view of the cabin as we pull away in the boat.... til next time.

In Bobcageon we went shopping on Canal Street. Maddie found some interestingly fun shoes!

Canal Street, where the rich and famous play... this bathing suit was too pricey for our pocketbook!

at the spot where the channel lets in a few boats, lowers the water, opens the gate, and let's the boats come play in Bobcageon. Very kewl, the whole process takes about 5 minutes.

we went to the beach to try out the worlds best french fries..... while we waited for them to cook, I tested the water, ahhh, very nice :-)

one of my favorite smells in the summer, a chip wagon with vinegar! Not something the Americans would know anything about!

a quick swing in the park, and back to the house.

Bev and Don came over for a visit, and a game of pass the ace.

this is what my Aunt and Uncles house looked like last time we visited......

and this is it today. Beautiful!!!!

we had to get up at 4:30am to get organized and be at the airport for 7am. My Aunt, Uncle and Cousin Gord came for the ride, really nice of them to do that considering the hour we left, but they saw us off to the point where the highway meets the main road to the airport, and we said out tearful byes... Gord's cat Peanut wanted to come, but we thot we'd better not take her....haha.
From here we dropped off the rental car, and proceeded in to Pearson, where I slapped the Plain White T's, and the rest you are caught up on :-)
