Lucky Birdy

This afternoon was the start of our long weekend in Montana at Ruby and Dean's cabin. First Carolyn worked an extra 1/2 to cover my shift so we could get out of town ahead of the rush, Maddie took the train to the store and we headed home to get Dean. Our mad dash out of the city and onto the highway.... where we saw..... nothing....

it was a white out! Driving snow, slushy roads, for about 15 minutes, then we hit the BC border and the snow stopped it looked like smooth sailing.... but then it snowed again. Anyway we made it across the border ( thanx again to Carolyn and Linda who covered my shift when I realized last minute that my passport expired, and Dean had to take me downtown to get a new one last Friday!! ) anyhooooo, we got across, and made it to the grocery store with 20 minutes left to shop. Close call.... yes Carolyn that was the 30 minutes you gave me today! Otherwise we would have been eating roasted almonds until tomorrow when we could get back to the store. The cabin is about an hour away. So.... we get the oven heated up for pizza, and Dean started a fire in the wood stove.... soon after he went to check on said fire..... and something dropped into the fireplace??? he put his beer and cell phone down so fast and actually swore in front in front of Maddie.... you know it's bad when.... me and Maddie asked with shocked sounds... What?? he said there is a bird in the wood stove!!! OMG! Maddie's little face had a look of horror, and we didn't know what to do, dean grabbed a towel and opened the fireplace door, the bird dropped out, Dean tried to move it and it squawked a horrible sound.... then it just sat there. And sat there...not moving.....we were afraid it was dead??? Then Dean remembered on Friends, Rachel trapped a bird in a pot, but the closest thing was an empty Coors box... so he plopped the box over the birdy, and slid it towards the door. At this point I said, he looks ok?? And we all agreed, he wasn't freaking out, so it was time to get the camera.

there's the luckiest little bird I ever did see........

once we got him outside and could see him better we noticed he was covered in soot, so it was hard to even see what color he was. He still just sat there tho?? I pet him, just to get him to move a bit and he started to hop.... then he seemed to get a breath of fresh air and continued to hop...

to the stairs.... down the stairs and across the grass. He wasn't flying but I think he was fine, and just needed fresh air.... so..... now we can enjoy the fire, and the pizza, and the beer, sit back and relax............ Happy long weekend everyone!!
