We pay tribute to The Majestic.

Well, in about 6 hours or so, we begin the second leg of our 4 city tour. We are very excited about heading to the Big Easy. However, before we do that, we want to look back and pay tribute to our host hotel for the last 3 days: The Hotel Majestic.

When we first walked in here, it reminded us of our favourite horror film hotel The Dolphin, the main character in 1408. And yes, in case you are wondering, that is definitely a compliment. The only thing missing from the Lobby was Samuel L. Jackson as the hotel's manager trying to convince us not to stay in the room 1408. Nicolas Cage has been known to have stayed here while in SF. We didn't see him. In fact, Selena noted today we didn't see anyone in the hallways or elevators during our entire stay...hmm....

This hotel has quite the history. It was built in 1902 as a private mansion of Milton Schmitt, a railroad magnate and a prominent California politician. Some of it's furniture are imported antiques from London and Paris. It was a perfect start to our stay and created an impromtu first tourist attraction. Here are some pictures of our temporary home - The Majestic:

Old meets new.

The lobby fireplace...

Our room - small but quaint...and a little scary.

And just like 1408, the window slides up and open with no screen and you could climb out there on the ledge... And you are given a real key not a keycard. Selena's bouquet is still pretty and add a nice touch to the room...

The room also took a few 1408 swipes at Selena. She hit her shin in the shower (ouch!) and something wrote "Welcome..now get out" on a steamed bathroom mirror. Ok, that was me...

Also, the hotel was ideally situated from all the main attractions. We went over our travels of the last few days and calculated we walked about 5 miles a day. We really covered a lot of real estate! I feel we really experienced SFs nice neighbourhoods because we walked through so many of them. You will see when Selena puts together the massive slideshow after she gets home. We also experienced SFs unique cab culture. That is, the art of urban Nascar driving. We even videotaped a cab ride because it is unbelievable how these dudes drive. I am a Deerfoot Trail veteran and I was surprised how close we got to some of the other cars. It will be a cool video for sure.

We are hoping the other hotels will live up to The Majestic standard...

Next stop: New Orleans - House on Bayou Road. We leave The Majestic at 04:30am - why not? Who needs sleep?

(Just a reminder, there are a lot of pictures on the blog - if you would like to enlarge any of them - just click on them and they will appear much bigger and in more detail...)
